“In the photographs that portray her as a young woman — beside Felice Casorati, or absorbed in the act of sketching her friends — Alice always appears with her palette in hand, gazing at it, searching for those answers she could find only through painting.
I do not use the word contemplation lightly
(cum templum, “together with the space of the sky”).
In these images, I recognize her temple: the space of painting itself — and, by synecdoche, her palette.
In the photographs of the mature painter, the palette is still there, yet now her contemplative gaze is directed toward the viewer of the photograph.
The space of the temple has grown: no longer confined to the palette, it has become an expansive humanistic gaze.
And it is with this spirit that Studio Psacaropulo opens Alice’s home to the public,
offering visitors a temple in which to dwell for a time in contemplation.”
