class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 1921, from Ianni Psacaropulo and Margherita Cambiagio, was born the youngest of four children \u2014 <strong>Alice Psacaropulo<\/strong>. From an early age, Alice showed a natural gift and deep passion for drawing, perhaps influenced by the great Carlo Sbis\u00e0. At seventeen, she became his model for two of his masterpieces \u2014 The Herbalist and The Solfeggio Lesson \u2014 of which two sketches survive here, both portraying the young Alice herself. From the same period likely dates the sculpted portrait of her face, carved by her brother Alessandro in the 1930s.<\/p><p>Her earliest dated works \u2014 from 1936 \u2014 are a group of school caricatures, among which stands out that of the writer <strong>Giani Stuparich<\/strong>, her teacher at the Dante Alighieri High School. Yet Trieste was too small for her ambitions. The city had no Academy of Fine Arts, and it was common for young Triestine artists to seek their training elsewhere \u2014 some went to Vienna, others to Venice or Rome. Freshly graduated, Alice chose Turin \u2014 drawn there by an artist whose work had enchanted her: <strong>Felice Casorati<\/strong>. Two of his <strong>drawings<\/strong> dedicated to her are still preserved. In Turin she formed lasting friendships with the philosopher Albino Galvano and the painter Paola Levi-Montalcini, among others from that extraordinary circle of artists. But above all, she learned from Casorati the art and science of pictorial composition \u2014 and the suspended, dreamlike stillness of his magic realism. They were unforgettable years.<\/p><p>Then came the <strong>war<\/strong>. In 1941, the villa was requisitioned by the Fascist government, as it was co-owned by a Greek citizen \u2014 her father Ianni Psacaropulo \u2014 who was sent into internal exile in Pistoia. Conditions worsened after <strong>September 8, 1943<\/strong>, when Trieste and the Adriatisches K\u00fcstenland fell under German control. Trieste became the only Italian city to host a concentration camp \u2014 the <strong>Risiera di San Sabba<\/strong>, today a memorial to remembrance. Alice was forced to return. In 1944 she earned her degree in Literature with a thesis in Archaeology on Roman Trieste, all while continuing to exhibit her work in both solo and group shows. In 1946 \u2014 the same year as her grand Martyrdom of Saint Justus displayed in the corridor \u2014 she exhibited at the Galleria dello Scorpione alongside two giants of Italian art: Carlo Carr\u00e0 and <strong>Filippo De Pisis<\/strong>, another celebrated painter represented in this collection. Her charcoal drawing of a man resting against a wall was bought directly from one of the Venetian gondoliers who roamed the canals with bundles of sketches that De Pisis, ever generous, exchanged for a short ride.<\/p><p>Among the other drawings in this room, two portraits deserve mention: one of Alice, drawn by one of the few Triestine artists able to live solely from his art \u2014 <strong>Bruno Chersicla<\/strong> \u2014 and the enigmatic Visage by <strong>Leonor Fini<\/strong>. Together, these works form a collection layered over time \u2014 a constellation of stories. The year is 1936: Stuparich has not yet written his masterpiece L\u2019isola and teaches at the Dante Alighieri High School of Trieste, where the young Alice studies. In her lively caricatures \u2014 often signed under the playful pseudonym Psa \u2014 she spares neither teachers nor classmates. Casoratian sketches and the figurative stylization in Alice\u2019s work<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"audio_description\">As recalled in a sonnet by Cesare Sofianopulo, in 1950 Alice married.  For her honeymoon, she decided to visit her former master, Felice Casorati, who, as a wedding gift, invited her to choose anything she wished.  Unable to bring herself to take one of his canvases, Alice instead chose two sketches \u2014 one in pencil, the other in charcoal, reminiscent of Girl in Pavarolo (1937, now at MART). \n The latter, in fact, was Casorati\u2019s preparatory study for The Three Friends, a work that marks the \u201canti-classical turn\u201d of the 1930s and 1940s \u2014 a moment when form yielded to introspection, and line began to whisper instead of shout.With the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the CRTrieste Foundation, the library\u2019s more than 1,500 volumes have been catalogued and are now accessible for research purposes.  The Studio Psacaropulo is part of the \u201cBiblioteche diffuse\u201d network of the Municipality of Trieste, and the library\u2019s inventory can be consulted online.  The family archive, declared of historical interest by the Regional Archival Superintendency of Friuli Venezia-Giulia in 2023, extends over approximately three linear meters of diverse materials \u2014 correspondence, photographs, brochures, and posters \u2014 spanning nearly a century and a half of local, and not only local, history. Leonor Fini\u2019s visage and the other mysteries of the collection<\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"audio_description\">Before entering the atelier-library, above the sculpted face of Alice made by her brother Alessandro, hangs the small Visage by Leonor Fini (Buenos Aires, 1907 \u2013 Paris, 1996). It leads us into a dreamlike, enigmatic realm \u2014 is it the head of Medusa? Or perhaps, still, Alice herself? In the 1960s, when this delicate ink drawing was made, Leonor often returned to Trieste to visit her mother, Malvina Braun, a close friend of Margherita Cambiagio.
